An article in a recent edition of the Inner West Courier stated that our Club is in conflict with cricket of the use of the Waterfront Drive Oval.
We would like to assure members of both Clubs that Balmain DFC is not involved in any alleged ‘plan’ to undermine cricket’s access over the oval – below is the text of an email the Club has written to the paper to set the record straight:
It was with great surprise and consternation we read in the Inner West Courier on 7 June that the Balmain & District Football Club is in conflict with cricket over Callan Park. This is certainly news to us.
There is not, nor has there ever been any plan by Balmain DFC to undermine cricket’s access to the ground. Balmain DFC is the only club using the fields that has invested any of its own funds – in excess of $200,000 - on the upkeep of the ground that we share with the cricket club.
As I stated at the recent former Leichhardt Council meeting that unanimously approved supporting the granting of a 5 year lease of the field to our Club, immediately after the cricket club secretary Terry Kelly had addressed the meeting, we aim to continue to work alongside the cricket club to preserve existing access to the ground for all of our members for the longer term. Our Club has actively campaigned for some time now to obtain greater access to sporting fields for all local sporting clubs – as has often been highlighted in previous articles in your paper.
If the journalist responsible had got in touch with us before publishing the article we would have been more than happy to provide assurances that Balmain DFC is not aware of any secret plan to undermine Balmain South Sydney Cricket Club’s access to Callan Park. We would be grateful if you could clarify this in the next edition of your paper.
As always, we remain happy to contribute to any articles on the important issue of the future of local sporting clubs in the area.
